An alternative to plastic cling foil

Why would an alternative to plastic cling foil be so important? Well, who has not seen them: Pictures of dying turtles who have eaten plastic bags which they thought of being jelly fish, Seagulls with plastic forks in their throats painfully starving, the cruel sight of a whale mother swimming next to her dead baby – poisoned of microplastic… Unfortunately, there are endless examples.

Sadly, we can only blame ourselves for what happens. It is so easy to look away and difficult to think about alternatives in the hectic everyday life. Fortunately, every little change counts and we all should try to make at least small changes.

The goal of beeskin beeswax wraps is therefore to offer you a simple and natural alternative to plastic and aluminum foil. Old records of our grandparents show, that beeswax wraps are not a new invention, but have only been forgotten. So let’s fall back on the known and tested and hopefully use less plastic – for our nature, our earth, our children and grandchildren!

beeskin beeswax wraps are made only from organic cotton, beeswax (tested for pollutants and pesticides), organic jojoba oil and natural tree resin. You can use beeskin beeswax wraps for up to 1 year. After that, they can simply be composted or used as a natural lighter for the fireplace. So yes, we do consider this as a powerful alternative to plastic cling foil for sure.

beeskin’s colors are reminiscent of the scent of lavender, the taste of sweet honey, the smell and the feeling of lush, green grass.

The face behind beeskin

I saw beeswax for the first time in the USA a couple of years ago and was immediately enthusiastic about it. After some research, I found out that it is not a a new invention but a well-tried fresh-keeping method that has been used by generations before us.

Unfortunately there are only 24 hours per day

Unfortunately, beeswax wraps are not produced quickly on the weekend and not everyone has time and desire to try which wax mixture works best, to hunt for the best quality ingredients and make beeswax wraps themselves. Since I myself am the mother of two children (boy and girl), a “hairy child” (German shepherd), a big child with a driver’s license (husband) and working as a graphic designer, I know that the day has only 24 hours.

100 meters of plastic wrap

I find the current development of our environment rather scary. Alone the summer of 2018 with extreme heat, floods and major fires in Germany is a sign that we have to change something. Certainly we will not stop climate change by using beeswax wraps instead of cling film. Nevertheless, it is a small step in the right direction. Every time I sell a beeswax wrap I am excited because that means that someone uses a bit less plastic cling foil. And if you look at the numbers that could be an average of up to 100 meters of plastic saved per household, per year. A respectable number.

Personally, I am always delighted when I hold the beeswax wraps in my hand, when I wrap my children’s food for school or put the leftovers in the fridge. I find the smell great, the usage and the way of using it, and the fact that natures gives us such an easy way to make food storage more convenient and sustainable.

However, it took a few years until I could find the time, the courage and the will to develop beeswax wraps so that I could sell them. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and have always had a lot of fun tweaking and trying out, developing the product and the design and building the shop through to marketing.

Have fun with beeskin!
